When the Word “Exercise” Felt Like a Threat
There was a time when the word exercise made my stomach turn.
Not because I didn’t want to move… but because every time I tried, I crashed.
I’d attempt a short walk or some stretches, trying to do the “right thing”… and then I’d crash.
Not in a dramatic, bedridden way — but in the quiet kind of collapse where I could hardly move.
For the next three (or more) days, I’d end up on the couch or sitting blankly in front of the computer, watching mindless YouTube videos… or worse, playing that endless ball sort game. It wasn’t avoidance — it was all I could manage in the thick fog of pain and mind-numbing fatigue.
The message I kept hearing was: You need to exercise. But my body wasn’t keeping up with those expectations.
I began to wonder if there was something wrong with me… or if maybe the problem was the plan itself.
And then this gentle truth rose up inside me: Maybe any movement counts.
The Shift: It Wasn’t About Exercise. It Was About Listening.
I realized I didn’t need a traditional exercise routine. I needed a way to rebuild trust with my body—and let it know it was safe.
So I bought a yoga mat. Searched YouTube. Found a 5-minute beginner routine… and to my surprise (and frustration), I couldn’t even finish it. I stopped around 3 minutes in.
But this time, I did something different: I listened. I waited 48 hours — the usual window when my delayed crashes would show up. But nothing came.
So I did the same 3 minutes again. And again.
Eventually, I built up to the full 5 minutes. When I noticed my energy was stable, I added just a minute or two at a time.
Not because I was trying to “get stronger”… but because my body said it felt safe.
And for the first time in a long time… I believed it.
It Wasn’t About the Yoga
This wasn’t about poses or strength. It was about relationship.
Every time I pushed too far, I crashed. But when I paused at the level that felt safe — when I stayed steady for a few days before adding more — something began to shift.
My body responded with trust. My nervous system softened. I felt like I was finally working with my body, not against it.
You Don’t Need a Fitness Plan. You Need a Listening Plan.
If you’ve felt betrayed by your body…If movement feels scary or like a setup for a setback… You’re not alone.
What if you didn’t need to force progress? What if you started with the smallest, gentlest rhythm your body could receive?
Movement isn’t the goal. Safety is. Trust is.
And when that trust is restored… even 3 minutes can become a miracle.
