When stress builds in the body, it can be difficult to slow down even when we want to pray or focus on God’s peace. Many women living with chronic fatigue, illness, or emotional strain notice that their bodies often react to stress before their thoughts do. Muscles tighten, breathing becomes shallow, and the nervous system shifts into survival mode. In moments like these, gentle practices such as slow breathing, prayerful meditation, and quiet presence with God can help the body gradually return to calm.

Recently I’ve been noticing this during my daily walks.

Last week I shared how I began walking again in a more balanced and sustainable way. Instead of pushing myself, I simply adjusted my distance based on how my body felt each day.

Before I head out the door, I often take a small moment to prepare my body for the walk. One thing I enjoy doing is applying Valor essential oil along my spine or sometimes on my wrists and neck. The aroma is grounding and peaceful, and it has quietly become part of the rhythm that helps my body shift into a calmer state before I start moving.

If you enjoy essential oils, that’s one I personally love using before a walk. If you’d like to see the oils I use, here is a place where you can find them.

As these walks became part of my routine again, I started adding something else: prayerful meditation while walking.

Nothing complicated. Just breathing slowly and repeating a few gentle, life-giving phrases.

For many of us, the nervous system calms best when we combine movement, breath, and truth together.

So while walking, I sometimes breathe slowly and repeat simple phrases like:

I am growing stronger.
My body is healing.
My energy is building.

These words are not meant to force anything or pretend everything is perfect. Instead, they gently guide the mind toward hope and help align our thoughts with the healing choices we are making.

Often I end those moments with a quiet prayer: “Thank you Jesus for walking beside me as I heal.”

These small practices create a space where the body, mind, and spirit begin to settle together.

Prayer and Meditation Have Always Been Part of Faith

In Christian life, prayer and meditation have always been deeply connected.

Scripture encourages us to stay in ongoing conversation with God.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer doesn’t always need to be long or formal.

Sometimes it’s a quiet moment while walking. Sometimes it’s a short sentence whispered between breaths.

The Bible also speaks about meditating on God’s truth.

Psalm 1:2

“…whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”

This kind of Scripture meditation simply means allowing God’s truth to gently shape our thoughts throughout the day.

When breathing, prayer, and truth come together, the nervous system often begins to recognize that it is safe to settle.

A Simple Way to Practice This

If you’d like to try something similar, keep it very simple.

While walking or sitting quietly:

1. Slow your breathing
Inhale slowly through your nose.
Exhale gently through your mouth.

2. Repeat a short, life-giving phrase
Choose something hopeful and simple.

3. Finish with a brief prayer
Even one sentence of gratitude can anchor the moment.

These small rhythms don’t need to be perfect. They simply create space where peace can begin to grow.

Supporting Calm Throughout the Day

These small rhythms of breath and prayer have slowly helped my body learn what safety feels like again.

In the evenings I support that same calm rhythm in another simple way. Before bed I take MAKE CALM, which helps my nervous system settle more deeply during the night.

What I’ve noticed is that when my body rests more peacefully, the next day feels more balanced. Decisions like going for my walk feel much easier and less overwhelming.

Of course, the practices themselves matter most — breathing, prayer, and gentle movement. These are simply small things that support the rhythms.

A Small Resource That May Help

If you’re learning to calm your nervous system and protect your energy, small daily resets can make a meaningful difference.

I created a simple guide called: The Daily Calm Practice — 3-Minute Faith + Breath Reset

It walks you through a gentle way to pause, breathe, and reconnect with God’s peace during stressful moments.

Healing doesn’t always arrive in dramatic ways.

Sometimes it begins quietly — with a slow breath, a simple prayer, and a moment of presence with God.

And often those small moments become the places where peace begins to grow.
