Coming back to simple, without pressure
After travel or a full season, it’s easy to feel like you need a reset. But for many of us, especially with lower energy or chronic fatigue, the best place to begin isn’t with a big plan. It’s with one simple, nourishing meal. I want to share how gentle food choices, hydration, and familiar routines can help your body settle and recover naturally.
I got home on Saturday afternoon, and by Sunday evening we were already back to a very normal supper. Chicken, roasted carrots, and sweet potatoes. My husband added mushrooms and shallots, and made a simple avocado cream sauce for the carrots. Nothing fancy, but it felt really good.
I’m not going to lie—the food on the ship was exceptional. Especially. The sous chef took the time to work around my food sensitivities, and instead of that limiting anything, he went above and beyond in both taste and presentation. It was beautiful, and I sent plenty of pictures home.
So when we sat down to our first supper at home and I commented on how good it looked, my husband actually thought I was being sarcastic. After everything I had just eaten… this?
But I wasn’t.
Because the reality is, coming home to a familiar, home-cooked meal felt incredibly satisfying. There was something about it that just settled everything. In that moment, I felt calm again, grounded, and fully back in my own space and life.
That’s something I’ve learned over time. I don’t “reset” after a trip anymore. I don’t feel like I need to fix anything or get everything back on track all at once. I just come back to what I know works.
Today at lunch, I fried three eggs in olive oil. Again, nothing fancy, but it was warm, simple, and exactly what I needed. This morning, I made sure to hydrate well. I’ve been adding Hydrated to my water, which is something I’ve found really helpful, especially after travel.
I’ve also got my usual snacks ready—my own mix of roasted, spiced nuts and dehydrated mango. Things that I know work for me, and that I enjoy. Nothing complicated, just simple choices that support my body.
I think sometimes we make this harder than it needs to be. We come back from a trip, or a busy season, and feel like we need to overhaul everything. Eat perfectly, get back into a routine immediately, make up for what we think we’ve missed. But most of the time, that just adds more pressure.
What I’ve found works better is much simpler than that. One good meal, a glass of water, something familiar—something your body recognizes. From there, things begin to settle. Energy comes back more steadily, and your body doesn’t feel like it’s trying to catch up all at once. You’re just moving forward again, one step at a time.
If your energy is low right now, or you’re coming out of a full season, you don’t need to do everything. Start with one thing. One meal. One simple choice that supports you.
If you want something gentle to come back to, I’ve put together a short guide called Small Rhythms for Hard Days. It’s simple, and it meets you right where you are.
You don’t need a reset. You just need a place to begin again. And sometimes, that begins with something as simple as a meal.
